Different Baccarat Systems

There is more than just one version of baccarat. In fact, there are three types of baccarat that are most common including North American Baccarat (Punto Banco), baccarat chemin de fer, and baccarat banque.

North American Baccarat (Punto Banco)

Punto Banco, North American baccarat, is most commonly found in the United States, Australia, Canada, and Sweden. The casino banks the game the entire time. Players may bet on the banker or the player, which aren’t actual players but rather designations for separate hands.

The cards are dealt face down and one at a time alternating between the player and the banker. There are only two cards dealt in the first hand. The cards will be turned over and the numbers added together to determine the score of each hand. The croupier announces each hand’s total and if the scores are within a certain range then a third card may be dealt. If either player has an 8 or a 9, which is considered a natural, then no additional cards will be dealt. For example, if a player has a score of 6 or 7 he will stand, but if the score is 0-5 then an additional card may be drawn. The banker’s hand determines whether he will draw a third card. It also determines if the player is able to draw a card or not.

There are many factors that affect the way the dealer will play and the croupier will always deal the cards correctly so the game is played by the rules. When a winning hand is reach then the croupier will announce the winner by calling either “banker” to signal a win for the banker or “player” to signal a win for the player. Then, losing bets will be collected and winning bets paid out.

Baccarat Chemin de Fer

In baccarat chemin de fer there are only six full decks of cards used. The cards must have the same pattern and will be shuffled together. All players are situated around the table and discarded cards are placed in the middle of the table. Players may draw cards to determine their seat at the table. The player that draws first place receives the seat to the croupier’s right and then the subsequent numbers are seated in order.

The croupier will shuffle the cards and then pass them to the players, who may shuffle the cards if they desire. Once the cards make their way back to the croupier he/she will shuffle them again. Then, the player to the left of the croupier will cut the deck. At this point the croupier will take a stack of cards from the deck and hand them to the player on his right who will act as the “banker.” The other players are punters.

The dealer will place his bet and then the other players will follow suit. If the other players don’t bet enough to equal the bank then others standing around the table have the option to bet. Any amount that exceeds the bank may be declined by the banker.

Then, the banker will deal four cards face down. The first card will be for the punters and then the deal will go to the right. The other three cards are alternating for the banker and punter. All of the punters are represented by the player with the highest bet. If the score is 8 or 9, then the game is over and the score announced. If the banker has the best score then the bank will take the punters’ stakes. On the other hand, if the punter has the best score then all of the punters will be paid from the banker’s stake.

Baccarat Banque

The biggest difference of baccarat banque from baccarat chemin de fer is that the positions do not change as frequently. Three decks of cards are shuffled together for this version of baccarat although in some cases either two or four decks will be used. The banker will remain the banker until he quits, deals all the cards, or loses all his money.

The bank is auctioned off before baccarat banque begins. The player willing to bet the most money receives the bank. There are some casinos that have other rules, however, so it’s important to always check the rules.

The banker will take his place across from the croupier and a basket will be placed in the middle for the discarded cards. Then, the punters will take their places and up to 10 may be accommodated at the table. Other individuals around the table may bet if the bank is not matched by the punters.

Once the cards have been shuffled by the croupier then the deal will begin. The banker chooses the person to cut the cards and is the last person to shuffle. Once the bets have been made by the punters then three cards are dealt by the banker. A card is dealt to the left, to the right, and one to the dealer. Then a second and third card are dealt in the same way. The cards on the left determine whether or not the punters on the left win or lose and the same for the players and cards on the right. The rules regarding a score of 8 or 9 and dealing an extra card follow the same rules as baccarat chemin de fer.
